Personalized 3D Printed Christmas Ornaments: Sizes, Names and What They Cost

5 min readBy Mandarin 3D

A personalized 3D printed ornament should be 60-80 mm across and 3-4 mm thick, with the name raised 0.8-1 mm in letters 12-16 mm tall. In PLA that's about 8-15 g, and at Mandarin 3D a 70 mm name ornament quoted at $9.68 delivered (six for $13.25).

Name ornaments sit near the top of this year's holiday print guides, and for good reason: they're small, they print in under half an hour, and a name makes them a gift instead of a decoration. Here's how to get one right.

Size and shape

Part of the ornamentSizeWhy
Diameter or width60-80 mmBig enough for a name, small enough for any branch
Base thickness3-4 mmStiff and won't snap at the loop
Raised letters0.8-1.0 mm above the baseCasts a shadow and leaves room for a color change
Letter height12-16 mm for one nameReadable from across the room
Hanging hole4-5 mmFits ribbon, string or a wire hook
Material around the hole2.5 mm or moreThe loop is the first thing to break

Flat shapes (discs, stars, trees, hearts, bells) print without supports and come out clean on both sides. Round baubles in two halves look great but need glue and a careful fit.

Names that fit

A 70 mm disc holds about 8 letters at 14 mm tall in a bold font. For longer names:

  • Drop the letter height to 10-12 mm, or
  • Go to two lines (first name over the year), or
  • Use a wider shape: an 80 x 50 mm rounded rectangle or a banner.

Keep the year or a second line at least 6-8 mm tall. Smaller text works but reads like fine print. Our minimum text size guide has the exact numbers.

Fonts that print well

The rule for any 3D printed text: every stroke at least 0.8 mm wide at the size you print it, about two lines from a standard nozzle.

  • Bold rounded sans-serif fonts are the safest. Even strokes, no hairlines.
  • Thick scripts look the most "Christmas". The letters must touch each other so the name is one piece, or sit on a base or backing.
  • Thin calligraphy only works at 25 mm or taller. Below that, the upstrokes disappear.

Two colors without painting

The classic look is white letters on a red or green base. Because the letters start at a different height from the base, the color can switch at that layer, so it's one printed part with no glue or paint.

At Mandarin 3D that's the multicolor option on the quote page: $3.00 per extra stocked color per order (up to three), with a short note like "letters white, base red". Stocked PLA colors are black, white, gray, red, blue and green.

A set for the whole family

Ordering every name in one order is the cheapest way: one order fee, one package. Two ways to do it:

  1. Your own file. Many ornament makers (MakerWorld's customizers, Fusion, Tinkercad) export a plate with every name. Upload that one 3MF or STL. Check the model's license allows paid printing; many free models don't (see prohibited items).
  2. The AI designer. Describe the shape, size and name, check the 3D model, then change the name and order again. Prompts that work: "a star ornament 70 mm wide with the name Luca raised 1 mm and a 5 mm hanging hole".

For stockings instead of the tree, we also sell a ready-made set: personalized stocking tags, four names for $19.99 shipped.

Care and safety

  • Heat: PLA softens around 55-60 °C. LED lights are fine; keep ornaments off old incandescent bulbs, out of hot cars and away from fireplaces.
  • Kids: these are decorations, not toys. We don't print toys or items made mainly for children 12 and under.
  • Storage: flat in a box. Printed ornaments don't shatter like glass, but the hanging loop can break if crushed.

Questions

What size should a 3D printed ornament be?

60-80 mm across and 3-4 mm thick. That holds a name in letters 12-16 mm tall, weighs 8-15 g in PLA and hangs on any branch.

How much does a personalized 3D printed ornament cost?

At Mandarin 3D a 70 mm disc ornament (about 11 g, 19 minutes) quoted at $9.68 delivered on Nov 3, 2026, and six of them at $13.25 delivered, before tax. A second color adds $3.00 per order.

Can a 3D printed ornament go on a tree with lights?

Yes, with LED lights. PLA softens around 55-60 °C, so keep it off old incandescent bulbs and away from fireplaces and heaters.

What font works for a name ornament?

A bold rounded sans-serif or a thick script whose letters touch. Every stroke should be at least 0.8 mm wide; thin calligraphy needs letters 25 mm tall or more.
